    The top on that cello is interesting. I had never paid that much attention to it before. It looks like slab sawn wood, which is not always considered the best wood by today’s luthiers, who are often trying to emulate the old ways, but missing the fact that a lot of the old ways include the use of wood that might be considered sub-standard today. But a lot of nasty looking wood appears in really old, great sounding instruments.

    By the way, I finally re-sawed the “mountain mahogany” from the Cave’s and it is unique stuff, but the density, weight, hardness and grain structure is nothing like true mahogany. Remind me to show you sometime when you’re over here.
