Royal P

I made a quick stop in Hollywood cemetery after checking out where the only Royal Paulownia tree I knew actually was. I knew they were in bloom now and had thought I had seen some more around town. The crew at Hollywood told me there were some on the river near Jefferson Davis and one of them had grown one from their seeds in his yard. They also knew of this one on Laurel St. where these picture’s were taken.

After a friends blog post on the Royal Paulownia tree I started noticing them. This is my favorite and couldn’t believe I spotted it in a posh west end neighborhood on Westham Pkwy.

 

Hidden Urban Wetlands

Jordans Branch winds through the west end of the city to the north side. I believe this may be the beginnings that sneaks back underground on the other side of road.  It’s kind of interesting trying to follow with pump houses around it and a National Guard station.

This part is a bridge over rt. 33 in town. I wasn’t ready for the 3 ducks that flew out missing me by inches. I was shooting with a slow shutter today so the ducks I photographed had to be fudged some.

DANGER

I’ve turned into a Front Man. I noticed the clouds all day and finally tried a shot while on the way to market for a gallon of 1%. This turned out ok but my back has been out for a week (first time in years) so I gave up on the cloud chasing.

Falling Creek 360

This is a short distance to the south of the bridge where the park between the lanes of route 1 begins. My wife was nearly swept away here trying to cross during the flooding of Hurricane Gaston. I’ll have to find out more about the old bridge which you use to be able to see from the road before the bridges were replaced because of the storm?

This Bee couldn’t have been over 1/8 of a inch long and sat and posed for me.

Amur Honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii) My first success at a close up panorama. Unlike the honeysuckle vine there are no drops of honey in this shrub-tree.

The Portraits

I don’t normally photograph in hard light anymore but some how I got away with it today. We had limited time with our friends from afar. The zillion people in Maymont made me a little squirrely also, but we were lucky enough to find a chair used for a wedding that had just taken place under the falls for my Sears Portrait Gallery fake of Catharine.
