It appears that FRECKLES has turned its OPEN sign off for the last time Monday July 6, 2009. Sue and Charlie (Freckles) Beard ran the Ma & Pa, comfort food, shotgun type restaurant for 20 years. In its heyday the food was better than any restaurant on Broad Street. Being only a block from our house it was our link to our neighbors and more than entertaining rumor-mill. There was constant drama and local writer Patricia Cornwell mentions it or a place modeled after it in one of her novels.
These type of places are getting rare and will never be replaced in our neighborhood. I’ve never been a regular anywhere before so this is like losing a home to my wife and I. We really feel sorry for those that just patronize the chain restaurants that have no soul. We befriended this place and stuck with it thru the good and bad times. It was truly a second life.
