“In 1875 Allen & Ginter released the first “Richmond Gems,” cigarettes made from domestic tobaccos. Drawing from past success with selling linens in attractive wrappings, Ginter designed packages for the cigarettes.”
Ginter’s varied interest were shown in his decision to construct the Lakeside Park in an area near what is now Lakeside Avenue and Hillard Road. This was a period of history known as the “Gay Nineties,” and bicycling on the “high wheelers,” with their tall front wheels was in vouge. He purchased nearly ten acres beside Brook Run and there built the Lakeside Wheel Club.”
